Radon is a Colorless and Odorless radioactive gas. Radon is not considered a widespread issue on Long Island, NY due to the local geology and lack of bedrock, nevertheless HomePort can provide Radon Testing upon request. Radon testing is typically recommended if there is a presence of glacial rocks in and around the foundation of the home, this is a common occurrence in older homes along the North Shore.
Radon comes from the natural decay of uranium that is found in nearly all soils and bedrock. It typically moves up through the ground to the air above and into your home through cracks and other holes in the foundation. Your home traps radon inside, where it can build up. Any home may have a radon problem. Radon is the second leading cause of Lung Cancer in the US, smoking is the first.
Testing is the only way to know if you and your family are at risk from radon. EPA and the Surgeon General recommend testing all homes below the third floor for radon.
